The liberal movement considers it their show because we were telling the stories of the 1970s. I think it resonates because it speaks to everyone on their level. The story begins as Laura accepts her first job, which is to perform sewing work, in order to earn money for Mary to go to a college for the blind in Iowa. Laura's hard work comes to an end when she is let go, and the family begins planning to raise cash crops to pay for Mary's college. After the crops are destroyed by blackbirds, Pa sells a calf to earn the balance of the money needed. While Ma and Pa escort Mary to the college, Laura, Carrie, and Grace are left alone for a week. In order to stave off the loneliness stemming from Mary's departure, Laura, Carrie, and Grace do the fall cleaning. They have several problems, but the house is sparkling when they are done.
Nancy quickly causes trouble at the school in Walnut Grove, but Laura has already worked out that Nancy is another Nellie. A young, talented painter named Annie Crane (Madeleine Stowe) is the talk of the town for her talent, despite having lost her sight in early childhood. An art exhibitor is impressed by Annie's work and arranges for her pictures to be publicized. Annie's birth mother realizes who she is and tries to arrange a meeting, but Annie refuses, embittered by memories of being abandoned by her as a child.
And both Caroline and Charles are propositioned by former married classmates. In the first episode of The Smoking Room, "Doo Di Dum Di Da", Robin can't remember the theme song for Little House. Pete grudgingly resigns to making football practice less severe, after nearly destroying his marriage and family life. Charles is elected to represent the farmers of Hero Township at a Grange convention in Milwaukee to consider a proposal that farming machinery should be bought directly from manufacturers, saving money for the farmers. At the same time, Caroline gets an invitation to the 25th anniversary reunion party of her school class of 1856 in the same city, so Charles and Caroline travel there together.

Larabee's wife, as a result of his hatred of many people, takes their sons and leaves him. Picking up where the previous season left off, the Ingalls family moves to Winoka, where Mary teaches at a new blind school established by Adam Kendall. Charles takes a maintenance job at a hotel owned by a despotic local businessman, Miles Standish (Leon Charles). Caroline takes a job as a cook and waitress at the hotel restaurant. Charles is disgusted by the noisy saloon and its foul-mouthed patrons. The Garveys arrive and move in right behind the Ingalls family, though Jonathan initially cannot find a job.
She and Laura help with chores but are too young to be of too much help to the family. Throughout this novel, the author describes the stresses and dangers her family endured as they sought out a new life in Kansas and built their own home. It wasn’t easy, but through perseverance and sticking together, the family made it through this chapter of their lives. Because of the success of the series, the Little House legacy has continued long after the show came to an end. Even today, the series remains in regular rotation worldwide and draws the attention of new audiences wherever it airs.
They find that some of their old classmates have become financially prosperous, and are on the other side of the proposal by the Grange. However, they are saddened by the state of some of the marriages of their old friends. When they return home, they agree that they are the ones who are really successful and prosperous – with the love of their family.

Much is made of the fact that he is 19 pretending to be 21 in order to obtain a homestead claim from the US government. As winter approaches and the railroad workers head back East, the Ingallses wonder where they might stay for the winter. As luck would have it, the county surveyor needs a house sitter while he is East for the winter, and Pa signs up. It is a winter of luxury for the Ingalls family as they are given all the provisions they need in the large, comfortable house.

He is forced to relent, however, when he is told that the leaders and businessmen of other nearby towns, having heard what happened in Walnut Grove, announce they will do the same thing. The First Four Years derives its title from a promise Laura made to Almanzo when they became engaged. Laura did not want to be a farm wife, but she consented to try farming for three years. At the end of that time, Laura and Almanzo mutually agreed to continue for one more year, a "year of grace". The book ends at the close of that fourth year on a rather optimistic note. In reality, a two-year drought and several other tragic events eventually put the Wilders into debt and drove them from their land.
