Garden Visit: Filoli Historic House and Garden in Woodside, CA

Travel health notice information can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s interactive map showing travel recommendations by destination and the CDC’s travel health notice webpage. As the director of horticulture, responsible for all the growing things at Filoli, Jim Salyards knows those grounds intimately, but one spot among the thousands whispers to him, no matter the season. Summer Nights invite visitors to explore the House and Garden in the golden hour. Indigenous Ohlone people maintain a seasonal village in the area.

A Little History

It is a great place either to start or end the garden tour. On out last visit to Filoli I wrote down some tips about what not to miss while touring the mansion and the gardens. After the passing of William and his wife, the mansion was sold to the Roth family, who kept growing the gardens and added a pool to it.

Can't Visit? Don't Worry!

The historic "Smith Mill" on Fault Creek was destroyed by fire in 1854. Pinckney's mill in "the largest gulch", which would be Spring Creek, was built in 1855 and later purchased by S. Although information on these mills is limited, they support the idea that "the area was thoroughly logged".[23] A large redwood tree remains on Laguna Creek just below the lower Filoli parking lot and on the main entrance road.

Spring Teas

Dani adds that Filoli is also focused on providing a greater narrative around water. She explains, “Filoli’s landscape tells a broad story of California history with water as one connective thread; from Ohlone villages nestled along creek beds to the Bourn’s industrial reservoir holding San Francisco’s water supply. Visitors to the estate approach via its grand driveway and may take a self-guided tour of the mansion. The route passes through foyers, porticos, libraries and a ballroom in which they hear a lively period waltz. From the humble servants’ quarters to the elegant drawing and reception rooms, the tour is peppered with informative placards that explain how each room was used. The mansion’s opulent interiors are a window into a bygone era.

Life of a Bulb

One of the most interesting parts of the house is the staff wing. It has for example a large Kitchen where the staff would prepare all the meals for the residents and their guests. The Butler’s Pantry has a huge safe to store all the silver tableware that used to be in use. Beautiful flower arrangements are situated all over the house and of course, the flowers are all from the Filoli Gardens. We also got a tip to look down while walking, since each room has a different floor pattern. This Tiffany & Co. family sterling silverware service for 18 comes from the early 1900s.

In the winter, the bare limbs are blanketed with moss, and the hundreds of branches make it appear as if the tree is wearing a fascinator of clouds. In the spring, the tree leafs out in brilliant greens with long, dangling chartreuse seed pods that dance in the breeze. As the days move into summer, the tree offers a welcoming, embracing umbrella of shade; sitting beneath it, time seems to still. Each season the house decor gets changed out, with lots of cut flowers in spring, goards in fall, and winter wonderland holiday decor in winter.

The kitchen is the most perfect vintage-style kitchen, complete with black and white checkered floors. Many people just wear their comfy, everyday clothes though! It’s easy to do lots of walking, so comfy shoes are nice to have (but I managed in short heels on my first visit). The daffodils still look bright and happy, there are pots of flowers throughout, and food/drink trucks are in the Meadow. It can get crowded in summer as well, but not as packed as in spring. There are bright and blooming tulips and daffodils throughout the entire property, the incredible cherry blossom trees are filled with pink blossoms, and there are food trucks parked in the Meadow ready to serve you.

Tracy loves rose gardens, and I always wonder how much it will cost at the nursery when we arrive back home. (we currently have 78 roses in our garden, but there is always room for more, or so Tracy tells me). These beauties lit up like firecrackers. When I saw these boxes for Carpenter Bees, I knew we had only just begun. The gardens contain components of both English and Italian Renaissance designs. Its reflecting pool was full of water lilies with the top of the old Carriage House (now the gift shop) Clock Tower peeking out above the yew hedge. “It had to be yew,” I crooned to Tracy, who pretended not to hear me.The view out toward the hills was fairly terrific, too.

Summer is the best time to see many different roses and zinnias in bloom. The garden is definitely the main attraction, and as a plus you will get to visit the mansion too. The second floor has a research library and can be used by the members of Filoli.

Until its completion, Pratt is waiting it out with his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, in a $32 million estate in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood. My family’s visit to see the house decorated for Christmas and the gardens draped with lights began on an inauspicious note, at the end of a long workweek with omicron casting a growing shadow over the holiday. My soon-to-be sister-in-law joined us on a brisk December night when the rain was coming down in sheets; it was the first time I’ve ever had to psych myself up for a visit. The estate wasn’t constructed just for aesthetic beauty, though it has that in spades. It’s a working estate that hosts a nature preserve with a peaceful, mile-long trail that’s open to hikers, fruit-producing orchards and an apiary that produces honey made by bees that pollinate the lavender fields and flowers.

They also have memberships for seniors and families at discounted rates. Filoli Historic House and Garden is one of my favorite places. It feels like you just stepped into a French garden, but you’re still in California! I love it so much that I got a membership so I can visit more often and get special members-only perks. Topics vary by day and season – peek behind-the-scenes during an Architecture Talk, compare floral scents during a Rose Talk, or discuss tulip tips during a Bulb Talk. Advanced reservations required, including member admission.

My favorite part of the Walled Garden, an expansive formal area subdivided into discrete rooms just off the glass-paneled garden house, is the Wedding Place, a terraced grassy staircase where the Roths’ daughter Berenice wed in 1941. And as at many historical sites in recent years, the curators at Filoli have made an effort to spotlight the less palatable aspects of its existence, such as the discrimination and racism prevalent in its heyday. Newport, who came to Filoli in 2016 after having worked at Delaware’s Winterthur Museum, said future exhibits will be shaped by this effort to take a more nuanced look at the estate’s past. A cozy night in for me typically involves a cup of tea, a dessert and a sumptuous period drama.

Before her death, Lurline ensured that would happen, refusing to sell the estate and instead agreeing to put it in the hands of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Filoli has been open for public tours of both the house and the gardens for almost 50 years. Today, visitors can join Saturday morning guided tours on the estate’s seven-mile network of nature trails that fan out across six native-California habitats—from redwood stands to grasslands. For those who prefer outdoor concerts to hiking, the 20th annual Jazz at Filoli series begins June 27.

Imagine my surprise when I learned there’s a historical Georgian Revival estate and garden that puts many of these screen delights to shame just south of my hometown. Perhaps you’ve only seen Filoli festooned with holiday lights or when the tulips gently wave their hellos — perhaps you’ve never found the time to stroll the estate at all. Now is always the perfect time to go, and when you do, here are 11 must-sees when visiting Filoli. In 1922, just as the gardens had been completed, Bourn suffered a severe stroke and was confined to a wheelchair.

The 0.83-acre home once featured an elaborate garden landscaped by Garrett Eckbo, and inside, offered five bedrooms and three bathrooms in a 2,770-square-foot single-story space, according to the Robb Report. To the contrary, Johnson played a key role in helping Trump try to overturn the election. Israel’s conduct in war against Hamas has eroded international support since Oct. 7 and threatens its special relationship with the United States. It was the Ohio National Guard that killed four unarmed students and wounded nine others at a rally against the Vietnam War at Kent State University in 1970. Since then, there have been uncountable examples of armed responses to nonviolent activities ending with innocent people getting hurt or killed.

Murmuring along to the Christmas songs sung much more skillfully by Ella Fitzgerald, the four of us clutched each other — and cups of mulled wine — under our umbrellas. It felt like our own pandemic-era version of a glamorous garden party — and my own cinematic moment. “Stories of Resilience,” the exhibit I saw in March, highlighted the stories of Filoli staff who faced adversity because of nationality, race or ethnicity. For example, Teikichi Taga, the estate’s Japanese butler, was forcibly relocated and incarcerated with his family in an internment camp during World War II.

Pratt’s new home is adjacent to Shriver’s two homes, each valued at over over $10 million, carving out a family compound of sorts in the neighborhood. Ungar has designed several multimillion-dollar mansions, including modern farmhouses, in Los Angeles. Last year, the couple purchased the 1950 Zimmerman house, designed by the architect Craig Ellwood, in Los Angeles’s Brentwood neighborhood for $12.5m. The residence, with landscaping by Garrett Eckbo – who has been described as the pioneer of modern landscaping – had previously been featured in Progressive Architecture magazine. Today, it is surrounded by wealth that makes the gold rush look like a low-stakes card game. The headquarters of Google, Apple and Meta, the parent company of Facebook, are all within a 30-minute drive.

Touring the Redwoods in Muir Woods, California

We were given the lay of the land, walked around the huge house we would tour later, and started our hike through its gorgeously manicured  gardens. William and wife Agnes died in 1936, and the estate was purchased by the Roth family the following year, so the property is also called the Bourn-Roth Estate. In 1975, Mrs. Roth donated the estate in its entirety to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, with an endowment that helps support annual operating expenses, and the property was opened to the public in 1977. Filoli is a historic estate worth visiting and admiring (and if you are so inclined, frolicking through.) Please join me as we tour around the spring horticultural tableaux at Filoli. Brick and wrought-iron garden gates and doors, many the hosts of thick accumulations of climbing wisteria and ivy, connect the rooms and are one of the few reminders of passing time.

The Creek

After the 1906 earthquake and fire, wealthy San Franciscans migrated south along the Peninsula to escape the city. Though the Peninsula seemed more insulated from earthquakes, the Bourns went on to build their new house 200 yards away from the San Andreas fault. The historically accurate interiors of Filoli complement the stunning exterior and gardens of the estate. The cutting garden blooms for more than half the year, including June! It’s where flowers are specifically grown to be cut for flower arrangements. There’s a table at the end of the pool where you can sit and enjoy the views, watch people walking by, and pretend you live there for a few moments.

Related Stories

The Walled Garden also flanks the main pathway and steps through the property. You have beautiful views of grassy steps leading up from a pond in the center. During my first visit, I ran down the center of two rows and it felt so nice! The incredible mid-century pool, surrounded by grass and rows of yews (the tall trees) looks like it came straight out of a Slim Aaron’s photograph in Palm Springs. In spring and summer they have food trucks in the shady area! They didn’t have any in this area in February, but there were multiple groups of people who brought their own food and drinks for a picnic.

A Little History

Doesn’t everyone need a bon bon spoon, pickle knife or shears for cutting grape stems? Throughout the house there are examples of the prejudice that existed back when the Bourns and Roths lived in the house. According to its website, “Though William and Agnes Bourn initially conceived Filoli as a humble ‘country place,’ the House was designed as a space for entertaining on a grand scale. The large Ballroom and Reception Room hosted concerts and debut balls, and formal dinner parties were held in the elegant Dining Room.”  As you can see by the ballroom, humble it is not.

The Bourn’s library showcased some of the family book collection. In the other direction stands another pool with large trees serving as a backdrop. Remodeling and renovation tips and ideas for projects big and small. Ideas to update and improve your outdoor space with hardscaping elements. Potential travelers should take local and national public health directives regarding the pandemic into consideration before planning any trips.

Introduce yourself to Filoli, where you can explore 16 acres of formal gardens, step back in time in the historic house museum, and hike through the lush and varied natural communities of the estate. Use this guide to enhance your experience at Filoli and as a souvenir to take home. The gardens extend southeast of the house running up an easy slope. The sunken garden is the first of four main rooms; the rectangular pool at its center that houses hardy and tropical water lilies is flanked by twin panels of lawn and two olive trees, within the hedge of clipped Japanese yew.

When you arrive, our staff will have your copy available to pick up at check-in. The cafe at Filoli has a seasonal menu that changes throughout the year. The food is premade and pretty good, but nothing fancy or exceptional. I always opt for outside to sit amongst the lovely gardens while I eat.

To connect our rich history with a vibrant future through beauty, nature, and shared stories. In 2004, the house changed hands to its last owners, couple Sam and Hilda Newman-Rolfe. Architect Ken Ungar, whose portfolio largely features high-end modern farmhouse-style residences, will design a home for the couple, Architectural Digest reported. The property, which is just across the street from Schwarzenegger’s mother, Maria Shriver, will also feature a three-car garage and a secondary unit near the pool. In different seasons you can enjoy different settings and events, and they are all very different. We walked thru the Rose Garden all the way to the Garden Orchard.

And the estate has become a go-to wedding site for the new rich of the tech boom, with expansive gardens, a large ballroom and plenty of space to wander off. The magnificent garden ended at the Wedding Place and the Tennis Court, from where we headed back to the visitor center. We absolutely loved this tour, so if you like flowers you should visit this place for sure.

Video of the property from December 2022 shows a light-filled home that appears to have been well-preserved, with large windows, wood floors and mid-century furniture. Chris Pratt has drawn ire from architecture aficionados after news broke that the actor and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, had razed a historic, mid-century modern home to make way for a sprawling 15,000-sq-ft mansion. The meeting took place at a giant 20th-century estate built by a family that made its fortune in the gold rush. Fall is also a great time at any gardens in California, as it is the time of the harvest festivals and many other events. Everything is decorated with fall colours and pumpkins, and you might be even able to catch some foliage.

New raised beds are being built for greater accessibility, plus dedicated seating areas for outdoor learning and live demonstrations. Filoli will also cultivate culturally specific plants and plants used by Indigenous people and regional immigrant populations. Today a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Filoli remains the sole intact estate from an era when San Francisco’s wealthiest families created grand showplaces south of the city in the years after the 1906 earthquake. Filoli, he prophesied, could well prove to be “interesting a few hundred years from now.” More than 100,000 visitors tour the property annually.

If you walk the trail next to the Rose Garden, it will lead you through a field up to a grassy area with columns. If you don’t want to miss the rose bloom, visit between May and September. He used it for his rehabilitation and his wife had the yews transplanted there for him from other areas of the garden. You will still get some flowers in the fall, plus some fall-related decor like this old pickup truck with hay bales and pumpkins.

“Our school is dedicated to the health and wellness of our students, faculty, and staff, and also of the communities within which they live and work, including the global community,” said Paris. Filoli, the grandest country estate in San Mateo County, hosted U.S. It’s been ten years since I last sailed on San Francisco Bay to Alcatraz Island. Last weekend I was finally able to visit Alcatraz again when my husband’s family was visiting us, and their wish was to see Alcatraz. On this exceptionally rainy spring, we were lucky and got to enjoy the warm spring weather…. Summers are sunny and hot, so don’t forget to bring your sunscreen!

Among the dining room there is also a Drawing Room, Breakfast Room, Study and a Library. One of the prettiest rooms in the house is the Ballroom in which someone was playing a grand piano. Filoli also allows picnicing, but only on a designated picnic area by the parking lot. Explore the beauty of the Garden with one of Filoli's signature drinks in hand. Make a day of your visit by having a delicious grab-and-go meal by Epicurean Group and leave with a little something from us at the Clock Tower Shop. Although I tried to steer Tracy away, she found a doorway, and soon we were inside the Clock Tower Shop spending money on plants that would travel southward with us as we drove home.

Building a StoryBrand

I recommend this book to managers, designers, and developers alike, as it provides a common-sense outlook on usability. Also, he brings plenty of entertaining examples to underline his points. Despite the anecdotes, I’m inclined to consider this a reference book, an introduction to user interviews. You’ll find it redundant and boring if you’re a seasoned UX researcher. However, if you’re a designer who has to do interviews, this book is a one-stop and memorable resource.

This UX book explores the psychological impact of many choices on human decision-making and well-being. Schwartz argues that while having choices is generally seen as a positive aspect of modern life, an excess of options leads to decision paralysis, anxiety, and dissatisfaction. UX design has taken center stage in technology businesses and is often used interchangeably with good business.

Klein's step-by-step approach considers every potential scenario in the product development journey and even includes advice on team building. Her approach ensures that readers understand user experience design and product engineering in-depth. "Seductive Interaction Design" explores the concept of creating engaging and compelling interactions for digital products.

That’s why it’s better to aim for the sweet spot where user needs meet business goals. Yael Ben-David explains everything we need to know in her book The Business of UX Writing. It’s all dependent on the kind of look you’d want to create for the home but more often than not, a great way to update without deviating too much from the ranch style aesthetic would be to go for brushed brass finishes. A great way for you to modernize your patio area would be to just rip all of the old raised decks out and tile it or lay it out with natural stones. This is also a great way to make the house blend in with the rest of the great outdoors. Some ornamental fencing could improve the aesthetics of your ranch house. Older styles catered to things that appealed to people and houses back in the day and those don’t always reflect what we want to see and feel in the homes today.

We have talked about the single-story design, the commonality of open floor plans, the windows, the patios, and so forth. But what about the actual construction and materials used to make ranch homes, you ask? Traditionally, many of the first West Coast ranch homes were made of stone or brick covered with stucco. The look of the ranch home and that inclusion of outdoor space makes since given the fact that ranch style homes trace their roots to California in the 1920s. The houses are indeed partially inspired by the type of home you’d find perched on the wide expanse of a cattle ranch, and the outdoor space makes sense because the California climate begs to be enjoyed al fresco. But stopping there sells this oh-so very American home style quite short.

A few years later, as Hallworth was beginning to establish herself as a player in the world of interiors, Dunst turned to her friend for help in designing the star’s first proper L.A. Home, a kind of reimagined Scandinavian lake house tucked in the Hollywood Hills. The varied angular rooflines and exposed rafters of this contemporary ranch style home add a little bit of spunk, while the wood accents and stone porch provide an earthy feel. We also love how the vertical siding, horizontal siding, and brick are painted the same color (Seapearl by Benjamin Moore) to bring all the home features together. Taking advantage of natural wood tones for the window frames will bring in warmth and brightness to the space and will further emphasize the casual and laid back vibe that ranch houses are quite famous for.

“Kirsten has worked with some of the world’s best costume and set designers, so she has an amazing eye. For her, it’s not about style or pedigree per se, but that sweet, lovely call of home,” Hallworth says. Many millions of these mall houses were built in developments nationwide during the building booms of the 1950s and 1960s. Some will be remodeled and enlarged; others will be treated to mid-century Modern decorating. Hollow core doors are a thing of the past and they can come off looking a bit too plain and simple. Replace your old fashioned hollow core doors with solid wood panels and frames for the doors and see the space come to life.

Ranch homes became popular in the post-war era because of how affordable they were to buy and build. They made for easy and comfortable living and they made great use of the outdoor areas surrounding the home as well. The kitchen and the living area are 2 of the best things to kind of connect together with the use of open space. It would be quick and interesting to change the color of the front door. You could try having a bright red front door that stands out from the rest of the typically neutral ranch home’s exterior aesthetics. Of course, you also need to consider if it works accordingly with the space that you’re trying to remodel and more importantly, if the design is cohesive with the rest of the house.

Architect Bud Dietrich advises that board and batten siding offers a classic look suited for homes with traditional design aesthetics. Whether you opt for wood or fiber cement materials, he believes vertical siding style creates an elongating visual effect that adds height and dimension to a home’s exterior. All of those factors came together to make the ranch house no longer as popular as it had been.” By the early 1970s, buyers and builders were turning to the so-called neo-eclectic homes that were larger, more formal, and more ornate. After winning the approval of the Federal Housing Administration, veterans and others could purchase a ranch house with the help of low-cost government loans—a monetary boost that catapulted the ranch house into unprecedented growth. Opt for native plants, a well-maintained lawn, and simple garden structures to enhance the ranch house’s curb appeal. Just because everyone’s going with white or black framed windows, you don’t have to do the same.

A key element of countryside living is the impression of the farm and the barn in the interior of the houses. This creates a visual difference and we see them as two different living spaces altogether. Since ranch-style homes are notorious for bridging the gap between indoor and outdoor living, you can also expect a sliding glass door in the backyard.

The Winchester Mystery House And The Creepy True Story Behind It

Magnuson wanted to open some of these rooms to the public, but not all of the house’s long-term employees agreed. On most days, two types of tours are offered, the Guided Mansion Tour and the Walk with Spirits Tour. The Mansion Tour takes guests around 110 of the 160 rooms and provides visitors with background information on Sarah Winchester and the construction of her home. The Spirits Tour invites guests to look beyond the ordinary by experiencing a wake in the parlor of the house, taking part in a Victorian-era séance on the third floor, and ending in the dark, spooky basement of the home.

Clowning for Novices: History and Practice With Rose Carver

Since her death, little has been uncovered about Sarah Winchester and the reasoning behind her obsession with building the Winchester Mystery House. She gave no interviews, left behind no journals, and had no family willing to speak about her. After her death in September of 1922, Sarah Winchester left all of her belongings to her niece, Marion, who had served as her personal secretary later in life. However, the Winchester Mystery House was never mentioned in her will, adding to the mystery of the home. Stranger so was the fact that many of the alterations seemed pointless. Staircases would ascend several levels then end abruptly, doors would open to solid walls, and hallways would turn a corner and end in a dead-end.

The next stop in the house is the south conservatory, which is the room with the most windows.

Legend has it that she did it to appease or confuse the ghosts of people killed by Winchester rifles. Getting to know the house is, in a strange way, like getting to know the woman who built it—and no ghost stories are necessary to marvel at its creativity and ambition. The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion in San Jose, California, that was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester.

Over the next few decades, Sarah experienced several tragedies that would shape her life forever.

But as Katie Dowd of SFGate points out, there is “scant proof” for this theory. Winchester could have been engaging in an eccentric brand of philanthropy, as she built her home during an economic depression, and the continuous construction project provided jobs for locals. When she died, in fact, the heiress left most of her money to charity.

The story took the rumors about the hauntings in the house and ran with them, depicting a woman crazed by the ghosts of Winchester rifles. Filming for the movie took place at the actual Winchester Mystery House. After the house was emptied, a local investor purchased the home for a cool $135,000. Just five months after Sarah Winchester died, the Winchester Mystery House was opened to the public for tours.

"It's like a time capsule really," Boehme told Business Insider.

According to Boehme, Winchester had a passion for remodeling and building homes after she helped construct one back in Connecticut. Boehme said the remodels were nothing but a passion project for Winchester. Winchester Mystery House™ offers complimentary parking to guests. Parking is available in the front lot, and there is overflow parking in the Santana Row garages across the street.

Most likely, she moved west to live in a drier and warmer climate due to problems with rheumatoid arthritis, an illness that plagued her all her life. Here she purchased an eight-room farmhouse and ranch in 1886, which she called Llanada Villa. This would eventually become the Winchester Mystery House. The United States has many unique roadside attractions throughout the country that focus on the strange and unusual.

The Winchester Mystery House: California’s Original Haunted Mansion?

Due to the lack of a plan and the presence of an architect, the house was constructed haphazardly; rooms were added onto exterior walls resulting in windows overlooking other rooms. Multiple staircases would be added, all with different sized risers, giving each staircase a distorted look. "Outside in the front gardens of the mansion, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. It was what appeared to be a bushy-haired woman staring out of one of the windows on the second floor," a guest identified as N.R. But those stories do, in some way, conceal the real Sarah Winchester. Publicity-shy though she may have been, she was more anchored in the real world than the spirit one.

The house became a tourist attraction nine months after Winchester's death in 1922. The Victorian and Gothic-style mansion is renowned for its size and its architectural curiosities and for the numerous myths and legends surrounding the structure and its former owner. The tale that she believed she had to keep building or she would experience death is not backed up by the actual construction record of the building. There are no records of séances being held in the house and staff members claimed that Sarah had no interest in them. Sarah’s relatives did not back up the claims of her being superstitious and her reclusiveness may have been due to her many physical ailments.

It would be difficult for anyone to give a definitive assessment of the motivations of Sarah Winchester since she was a private person who did not reveal much to the public. What I do know is that she left us with a mystery and an unusual home as an artifact. In addition to daily tours, guests are encouraged to stroll around the property by taking the self-guided Sarah’s Garden Tour. In true roadside attraction fashion, all visitors exit through an extensive gift shop featuring a variety of souvenirs. Knowing very few details about the history of the Winchester Mystery House, my daughter, Liz, and I booked a weekday noon tour and drove from San Francisco to San Jose.

Inside you'll find quite a few architectural oddities, like a staircase that leads to nowhere, cabinets that open into walls, and a door that opens up to a 12-foot drop. Since 1923, tours have been taking curious visitors through the gargantuan mansion, which remains a famous tourist attraction today. The remnants of the seven-story tower that toppled during the 1906 earthquake—finials, rails, and decorative trimmings that rained down like beads from a chandelier—are kept in the cavernous attic space. To make it accessible to visitors, Taffe’s team has fitted the area with myriad handholds and stabilizing planks.

The Winchester Mystery House: Californias Original Haunted Mansion?

winchester mystery house photos

Boehme said it's likely that Winchester used this space as a sauna to help ease her arthritis. While some believe this staircase was meant to confuse ghosts, Boehme said Winchester actually designed the smaller steps so that she could easily get upstairs with her arthritis. The pointed spires, the wraparound porch, the shingles, and the elaborate columns are all popular features of a Queen Anne Revival, according to Boehme. We took a 65-minute tour through 110 rooms of the unique estate in the fall of 2019.

After appraisers deemed the house worthless due to its strange design, damage from the earthquakes, and long-winded construction, Marion took everything in it and auctioned it off. The current owners of the house claim it took six weeks to empty the house of all furniture, though the report is uncorroborated. Unfortunately, in 1904, an earthquake struck San Jose, and the Winchester Mystery House sustained a hefty amount of damage. Thanks to the floating foundation (a foundation that equals the weight of the surrounding soil) the entire house was saved from collapse.

Building The Winchester Mansion

It has been a beloved piece of quirky, creepy Americana since it opened. More than 12 million slack-jawed visitors have followed a planned route through Winchester’s singular vision. Other than household staff, few saw the home’s interior during Winchester’s lifetime. She kept to herself following the deaths of her husband and infant daughter, Annie, from illness.

Sarah Winchester

Boehme describes the room as "elegant" with embossed wallpaper that surrounds the space and elaborate furniture that fills the room. Although it's beautiful, there is a darker reason why this room is so famous. This is the room where Winchester died of heart failure in 1922, at age 82. The great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 damaged the Winchester mansion all the way out in San Jose. After seeing the damage, Boehme said Winchester decided to remove the top few floors because it was too dangerous.

winchester mystery house photos

The staircase landing opens onto an array of finished and unfinished rooms, including the Crystal Bedroom, where pale yellow, mica-flecked wallpaper gives the walls a luminous quality. One reason this room had been off-limits for so many years is concern about what sunlight might do to the wallpaper, so at some point it may need to be sealed off again. Though the house has a reputation as a dim warren, its estimated 10,000 panes of glass reflect Winchester’s desire for natural light. At one point, an outdoor patio was enclosed, so she had a skylight installed in its floor to pull light from above into the newly shrouded room below. It’s as though she carved tunnels through the house to let light penetrate. Nearly 100 years after the house opened for tours, millions of guests have visited Sarah Winchester’s beautiful home.

Labyrinth construction

The top three floors were ultimately removed, leaving the house with only four stories, as seen today. There was no plan – no official blueprints were drawn up, no architectural vision was created, and yet a once-unfinished house took shape on a sprawling lot in the heart of San Jose, California. Inside, staircases ascended through several levels before ending abruptly, doorways opened to blank walls, and corners rounded to dead ends.

Wild Life: Synchronized Coral Spawning

The legacy of the Winchester Mystery House is embedded in its many unusual architectural and interior design novelties. Boehme finds that the legend has little power to explain Winchester’s unusual construction ideas. “A lot of stories were told about her way before she died, even. She really wouldn’t engage or talk to the press because they said such bad things about her.” During her lifetime, her silence likely fed all sorts of rumors.

AHEAD OF HER TIME

In 1884, Sarah Winchester purchased what would later become known as the Winchester Mystery House. At the time of the sale, the house was a small unfinished farmhouse, but that quickly changed. Boehme said the windows share similar motifs and similar glass, but they have different types of designs. The Daisy Bedroom has daisies in its stained-glass windows, for example.

Even 95 years after her death, it seemed that Sarah Winchester’s house was still holding on to some secrets. In the years Sarah Winchester lived in the house, the residents of San Jose whispered about its strange construction and even stranger inhabitant, but it was in the years after her death that the wild stories became even wilder. Newly in possession of a massive fortune and struggling with the loss of her husband and daughter, she sought the advice of a medium.

Sarah Winchester was a woman of independence, drive, and courage who lives on in legend. And the mansion she built is world renowned as much for the many design curiosities and innovations (many ahead of their time) as it is for the reported paranormal activity that resides within these walls. The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California, is one of the nation’s most curious landmarks. Built by a millionaire widow over the course of 36 years, the sprawling mansion features more than 200 rooms, 10,000 windows, trap doors, spy holes and a host of other architectural oddities. Inside the maze-like estate, visitors may hear that unsettling organ play, or see ghostly figures trapped on dead-end staircases or meandering down twisting hallways. Like any good haunted house, the Winchester estate has its fair share of secret passageways, as well as a dedicated séance room.

Some heroic construction work went into making sure the new spaces were safe, according to Michael Taffe, head of the house’s operations and maintenance team. “There’s a lot of modifications to actually make that a route,” he says. “You had raw redwood that wasn’t finished; it had to be framed and covered with plaster.” Wonky nails were pounded flat, old earthquake debris was cleared out, and floorboards installed.

For the most part, no one was permitted even to photograph her. “There’s a story about Teddy Roosevelt making an appearance in San Jose and wanting an audience with the Winchester widow,” says Magnuson. “He knocked on the front door and was not even let in.” Her eccentricity and the ghost stories—not to mention the scandal of a woman living autonomous and alone—have always been amplified in the house’s history. More striking, though, is the extraordinary artistic freedom she exercised in creating it, as well as the lengths to which today’s staff must go to keep the house intact and open. In the 1800s, Sarah Winchester—the peculiar heir to the famed rifle company fortune—began building a labyrinthine Victorian mansion in San Jose, California. The story goes she spent four decades transforming the eight-room farmhouse into a sprawling 161-room complex hoping to outrun the ghosts of the people killed by a Winchester rifle.

The ballroom is the biggest room in the house with the highest ceiling, reaching 12 feet. A fireplace mantle takes up most of one wall, while wood paneling covers most of the other walls. After this conservatory, visitors pass from the newer part of the house to the older part, using a small set of stairs that once acted as exterior porch steps.

There’s a way that these reports of hauntings, the mythos behind Winchester herself, and the staff’s enthusiasm for it all create an atmosphere of suggestibility. The new Winchester movie plays on that idea, and so do some of the newer upgrades that have been made to the house. Taffe, who used to work at a theme park, has a nose for this kind of theatricality. He and his team recently perfected a high-octane sound clip that replicates the 1906 earthquake that brought down the house’s turreted tower and trapped Winchester in the scroll-covered Daisy Bedroom for hours. “This is the full-length one.” As a speaker in the nearby bedroom emits a rising bellow, the floor starts to shake. Sounds of smashing glass and crockery punctuate the rumbles.

One of the first things you notice upon approaching the Winchester Mystery House is that the front door is not aligned with the roof peak above it—it is staggered slightly to the right. This might be a minor detail, but it hints at the disorder that unfolds within. The mastermind behind this architectural oddity—a sprawling Queen Anne Revival with 160 rooms—was Sarah Winchester, the widow of the rifle magnate William Winchester. Famously private and eccentric, she built onto her California home on and off for more than 30 years.

I even remember that one of the windows had Sarah Winchester peering out from behind a curtain. I often wondered what it would be like to visit the real home. Almost fifty years later, I had the opportunity to do that with my daughter. Winchester hired carpenters to work around the clock, expanding the small house into a seven-story mansion.

April 24, 2024 US university protests

new house speaker

I’ll save that aspect for another column, because as I’ve already reported, in one of the great unanswered crises of our time, millions of people either can’t find care as they age, or they can’t afford it, or they go broke paying for it. House Speaker Mike Johnson called Wednesday for the resignation of the university’s president if she can't "bring order to this chaos." “He lights himself on fire,” Maddrey said during a news conference Friday afternoon.

Rep. Don Bacon is seated next to New York GOP members Nick LaLota and Anthony D’Esposito, as he did for the previous votes. Rep. Eli Crane has his kids in the chamber and is seated near the back right behind GOP hardliners Reps. Ken Buck, Andy Biggs, and Matt Rosendale. "House Republicans and speaker Mike Johnson will never give up," she added. "Mike is a titan on the [House] Judiciary Committee and a dedicated member of the House Armed Services Committee, and as vice chair of our conference, he has united all of our members to speak clearly and boldly on behalf of the American people," Stefanik said. "A friend to all and an enemy to none, Mike is strong, tough, and fair, and above all, Mike is kind." She has written for outlets including the Washington Examiner, Daily Signal and Alexandria Times.

Calmes: That scowl. The gag order. Frightened jurors. Who’s on trial, a former president or a mob boss?

Johnson has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and was a key congressional figure in the failed efforts to overturn the 2020 election. Johnson was first elected to the House in 2016 and serves as vice chairman of the House Republican Conference, as well as GOP deputy whip, an assistant leadership role. "I made my decision based on my relationship with the conference," Emmer told reporters when asked whether Trump helped doom his candidacy. Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election results after Jan. 6, 2021, but signed onto an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to overturn the presidential election results. "Therefore, the Honorable Mike Johnson of the state of Louisiana, having received a majority of the votes cast, is duly elected speaker of the House of Representatives for the 118th Congress," McHenry, the interim speaker, announced after reading the final vote tally. Johnson was sworn in as the 56th House speaker soon after winning the vote and delivering a speech to lawmakers in the House chamber.

Editorial: Speaker Johnson must ignore GOP hardliners and pass Ukraine aid now

WASHINGTON — They helped lead the efforts to keep former President Donald J. Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election. They spread lies that helped ignite a mob of Trump supporters to storm the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The practice of earmarking — where a single lawmaker can use a sliver of the sprawling government budget to send money to a specific project in his or her state — has been both embraced and reviled over the years. Congress banned the practice more than a decade ago, after a series of scandals tied to earmarks and anti-spending fervor swept through the institution with the rise of the Tea Party, but it has since reintroduced it with more guardrails.

Most new home speakers are water-resistant, but if you do plan on using these units around water (such as in the kitchen, bathroom, or poolside) pay attention to the IPX rating – the lower the rating, the less water it can handle. Light splashes are okay for an IPX4, but for a completely waterproof speaker, the scale goes up to IPX8, which can be submerged up to three meters without damage. By contrast, Biden, who won 51% of the vote last time, knows that Trump’s core vote is solid. Rather than try to chip away at Trump’s total, his goal has to be to get past him.

Here’s what to watch for in the 14th round of voting for House speaker.

new house speaker

Johnson’s role three years ago is relevant now not only because the speaker is second in the line of presidential succession, after the vice president. The House Johnson now leads also will have to certify the winner of the 2024 presidential election. After the 2020 election, Johnson also echoed some of the wilder conspiracy theories pushed by then-President Donald Trump to explain away his loss. Then Johnson voted against certifying Biden’s win even after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

He said a continuing resolution could have a deadline of Jan. 15 or April 15, depending on the consensus in the GOP conference. As speaker of the House, Johnson will have final say over what bills make it to the floor. Funding the government past a deadline of Nov. 17 is the most pressing item on the agenda. He voted this year in favor of the debt limit law negotiated by McCarthy and Biden. But he voted against the stopgap bill to avert a government shutdown on Oct. 1.

RS Recommends: The Best Home Speakers for Room-Filling Sound

The election on Wednesday of Mr. Johnson, 51, to the post second in line to the presidency has focused new attention on his behind-the-scenes role in trying to overturn the election results on behalf of former President Donald J. Trump. If Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio was the most prominent public face of the congressional effort to fight the results of the 2020 election, his mentee, the newly elected Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, was a silent but pivotal partner. Johnson says that he will bring to the floor “in just a little while” a resolution in support of Israel. “We’re going to show not only Israel but the entire world that the barbarism of Hamas" is "wretched and wrong,” he said. “From an outside point of view these last few weeks probably look like total chaos, confusion, no end in sight," he said. "But from my perspective, this is one of the greatest experiences of the recent history of our republic." Representative Ken Buck of Colorado said that Mr. Johnson was not involved in postelection efforts to invalidate the results, even though Mr. Johnson was a critical player in those activities.

Asked by CBS News if the goal is to hold a floor vote Tuesday afternoon or evening on a House speaker, McHenry held up his hands in a shrug-like gesture. Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry left the conference meeting around 11 a.m. "I've supported every Republican nominee to be Speaker of the House so far, but I will not vote for Tom Emmer on the House floor," he said.

Mr. Biden spoke to Johnson on the phone a short time later, the White House said, to offer his congratulations and express "that he looks forward to working together to find common ground on behalf of the American people." In a statement distributed by the White House, President Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden extended their congratulations to Johnson, and the president reiterated his commitment to working with him "in good faith" for the American people. "The people's House is back in business," Johnson told colleagues before being sworn in. It will need to come up as a suspension vote — an expedited process that requires a two-thirds majority for passage. House Speaker Mike Johnson entered the speaker's office for the first time after being sworn in, with his new name plate hanging above the door. “I have never been comfortable with CRs (continuing resolutions), but it … is going to be difficult for Mike and anyone who steps into that job, but I think he is going to do a great job,” Rep. Eli Crane, a Republican, told CNN.

WASHINGTON — Kevin McCarthy’s chaotic campaign for the speakership has become, for some in Washington, a spectacle to be consumed with the urgency of a major sporting event. At the same time, Mr. Gaetz had reportedly sought a subcommittee chairmanship in the House Armed Services Committee. The dramatic moment was captured on C-SPAN’s video cameras, which, lacking the typical restraints placed upon them in a House with a speaker, were free to show whatever moments from the floor its operators deemed newsworthy. Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida, had declined yet again to vote for Representative Kevin McCarthy of California on a 14th ballot, helping sink McCarthy’s chances at speaker that round. Even by the heated standards of the tensions that flared among House Republicans during their four-day push to elect a speaker, what happened on the House floor around 11 p.m. This is the first time Hal Rogers of Kentucky swears in the speaker, following the death of Don Young of Alaska in 2022.

Mr. Johnson came to Congress in 2017 with support from the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, though he has never joined the group. In December 2020, Mr. Johnson collected signatures for a legal brief in support of a Texas lawsuit, rooted in baseless claims of widespread election irregularities, that tried to throw out the results in four battleground states won by Joseph R. Biden Jr. “While there are issues where we differ, we must get back to governing for the good of the country,” Mr. Lawler wrote on social media, posting a photo of himself and Mr. Johnson shaking hands.

Gaetz was scheduled to appear at the Palm Beach event before the speakership vote was scheduled. He added that he wants House floor votes on a speaker regardless of whether a candidate has enough votes to win. "I did not want this to go to the floor before we're united, and we should have done that this morning. It was not done," Roy told reporters in the Capitol. "Look, Steve’s going to have to talk to them all, see what the concerns are," McCarthy told reporters. Democratic leadership sources told us they believe they'll get an hour's heads-up from Republicans when it's time to bring the vote to the floor, but nothing is certain.

Washington — Rep. Mike Johnson, a Republican of Louisiana, won election as the new speaker of the House on Wednesday, ending three weeks of chaos since Rep. Kevin McCarthy's historic ouster. The members who ousted McCarthy also told reporters that they have no regrets now about ousting McCarthy. The Senate and the White House are still controlled by Democrats and any spending bill passed will need Democratic support to become law and avert a shutdown.

Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, one of the eight Republicans who voted to remove McCarthy last week, says he will vote for Scalise as the new speaker. McCarthy said Scalise has his support when the speaker vote comes to the floor. "But again, that is because he will be aggressively allowing me to pursue and do my job." The pause comes down to the fact that Scalise doesn’t have the votes to get to 217 right now. We can count several lawmakers who say they’re against Scalise, including Boebert, Good, Roy, Massie, Cloud, Max Miller, Greene and Luna.

Arrested in Mexico, Jose Luis Saenz sat on the Alaska Airlines flight in handcuffs, escorted by FBI agents to a city that had changed profoundly in his absence. By the time he stood trial in 2022, the jury was transported to places that no longer existed. The gangs that detectives said ruled over the projects, frightening families into returning home before sundown, had dwindled in size and influence, but the legend of Smiley, Saenz’s nickname, endured. This newspaper’s editorial board also disagreed with USC’s decision, writing that the message “this sends to graduating seniors is that when a threat to free speech arrives, it’s time to cave.” Readers were split over the decision, while outside experts offered potential fixes.

Mike Johnson elected House speaker with unanimous GOP support, ending weeks of chaos

Emmer can only afford four defections in a vote on the House floor to still win the speakership. Asked Tuesday evening by reporters whether Trump's opposition had been a deciding factor in his withdrawal from the speaker race, Emmer replied, "I made my decision based on my relationship with the conference." Johnson said his first priority would be to pass a resolution denouncing Hamas for the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel that left more than 1,400 people dead. Israel is said to be preparing for a ground offensive in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and lawmakers have been anxious to show support for the key U.S. ally as the speaker's fight dragged on. "We're in overtime right now, right? So you don't blame the backup quarterback for the failures of the guy that just came out of the game," Perry told reporters.

Gauging Kennedy’s support

Last month, Johnson was among 93 Republicans who voted for an amendment by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., to cut off U.S. military assistance for Ukraine. Johnson's voting record has earned him a lifetime rating of 92% from the American Conservative Union and 90% from Heritage Action. Mr. Emmer had attempted to mollify Mr. Trump by calling him over the weekend and praising him, according to the former president. Some hard-right Republicans consider themselves a distinct political party from their more mainstream, business-minded colleagues, whom they accuse of being in a “uniparty” with Democrats. A majority of those opposed to Mr. Emmer were members of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus and loyal to Mr. Trump.

The Democratic leader also vowed that his party will continue to support Ukraine to defeat Russia's aggression. Johnson also acknowledged that the chaos of the last three weeks has chipped away at Americans' confidence in the lower chamber. Johnson has laid out a tentative legislative schedule to approve new spending and take up other pieces of legislation, but things could change quickly as he confronts the realities of governing, especially given the fractious nature of the Republican conference. Speaking after the vote, Johnson vowed to hit the ground running and get the House back to work. There’s a strong desire among Republicans to show a functioning House after being paralyzed for weeks following the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The House is expected to vote on a resolution in support of Israel on Wednesday afternoon, according to a notice from the House Democratic whip.

After opposing Emmer bid for speaker, Trump says his "strong suggestion" is to support Johnson

Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas told reporters some of Emmer's past comments are "causing him some problems today," though he didn't specify what the statements were. Still, the Texas Republican cast doubt on Emmer's ability to garner 217 votes and again pledged to nominate Trump for speaker on the floor. House Republicans have begun voting on the first ballot for their speaker nominee after convening to elect a fourth candidate just hours after Emmer, who won the conference's nomination earlier Tuesday, withdrew his candidacy amid growing opposition. Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart, another Scalise supporter, told reporters after Johnson was elected speaker-designate that he believes Republicans are "back" and the conference's agenda "back on track." Johnson was the party's fourth nominee for speaker in three weeks, having taken the place of Rep. Tom Emmer, whose candidacy lasted all of four hours on Tuesday.

"We need to move swiftly to address our national security needs and to avoid a shutdown in 22 days. Even though we have real disagreements about important issues, there should be mutual effort to find common ground wherever we can," the president said. "This is a time for all of us to act responsibly, and to put the good of the American people and the everyday priorities of American families above any partisanship." Johnson, a little-known lawmaker who is now second in line for the presidency, attracted the support of all 220 Republican members in attendance, surpassing the 215-vote total that was required to win. All 209 Democrats voted for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the party's House leader. “The door to the speaker’s office now is open to the members and to the constituents, not just the lobbyists,” Rep. Matt Rosendale told reporters. After three weeks without a speaker, the House voted Wednesday to elect Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana.

“You don’t want people who falsely claim the last election was stolen to be in a position of deciding who won the next one,” said Rick Hasen, a law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. On Wednesday, he flagged another worry about Johnson, who is a constitutional lawyer. Johnson’s opposition to abortion — he favors a national ban — and to same-sex marriage and LGBTQ+ rights and protections is well documented in his pre-Congress work as an attorney for the socially conservative Alliance Defending Freedom. After the Dobbs decision overturned the constitutional right to an abortion, Johnson suggested that now women would produce more “able-bodied workers,” whose payroll tax contributions would help save Medicare and Social Security. Scalise, who voted to save McCarthy, has not said whether he wants the job. The House will now take a long break, with no votes expected before next Tuesday.

GOP members who had been opposed to Johnson's bid voted "present" and the Louisiana Republican prevailed. The list of the 10 speakers who served in the job longest includes just one Republican (and in the ninth slot at that). That speaker was Joseph G. Cannon of Illinois, notorious as the autocratic "Czar Cannon" during three two-year tours as speaker that ended with his party's historic defeat in 1910. His predecessor, Frederick Gillett of Massachusetts, also had the top job for less than five years. But when he left after the 1924 session, his party was still firmly in control and had just elected President Calvin Coolidge to a full term. In 1994, two years into the presidency of Democrat Bill Clinton, Gingrich organized a campaign around a 10-item agenda called the "Contract with America." It provided a unified message for the party's nominees, who flipped more than 50 seats and stormed into the majority.

While it was long before the dawn of Twitter, super PACs and C-SPAN, things really haven’t changed all that much in Congress. The Republican divisions obstructing Mr. McCarthy’s decade-long ambition of becoming speaker of the House have been playing out on both the national stage in Washington and a far smaller though equally telling one in his hometown and home district. It is easier to find detractors on his far-right flank than die-hard supporters, in what should be friendly home turf for California’s top Republican — one of the reddest cities in one of the bluest states in the country. Reading clerks, who are often described as the “voice of the House,” are responsible for reading bills, resolutions, motions and more on the House floor, and for reporting the chamber’s legislative actions to the Senate. Mr. Gaetz, Mr. McCarthy’s chief antagonist, has accused the G.O.P. leader of selling his soul to lobbyists and of pursuing the speakership because of his own vanity. Still, a large contingent of the crowd hung on, with a mixed but visible reaction to Representative Lauren Boebert, who had been a hard holdout, voting “present.” Some booed, and one yelled “sellout!

He accused GOP lawmakers of working to find a candidate for speaker who can pass their "extreme litmus test" opposing marriage equality, cutting Social Security and Medicare, and enacting nationwide restrictions on abortion. Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, chairman of the Democratic caucus, rose to nominate Jeffries for speaker and accused Republicans of manufacturing a crisis that has lasted 22 days. Shortly after 1 p.m., the House began voting for speaker, with Johnson as the Republican nominee and Jeffries as the Democratic nominee. In a press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the White House, President Biden welcomed news of Johnson's election.

The new speaker has been in Congress since 2017 and has no experience in the House leadership. Mike Johnson, the Louisiana congressman who was elected speaker of the House of Representatives on Wednesday after a three-week standoff among Republicans, took the lead in filing a brief in a lawsuit that sought to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election win. That claim, widely panned by legal scholars of all ideologies, was quickly thrown out by the U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., told reporters today that she will support Scalise for speaker when the formal vote takes place on the House floor. Also part of the proposal, Republicans familiar with it said, was a commitment by the leader to give the ultraconservative faction approval over a third of the seats on the powerful Rules Committee, which controls what legislation reaches the floor and how it is debated.

But Johnson's record on Ukraine funding has been criticized by Ukraine advocates. Johnson received an "F" grade from Republicans for Ukraine on its GOP Congressional Report Card. Johnson did vote for the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022. "Today is the day that House Republicans will humbly look in our hearts and elect Mike Johnson as speaker of the People's House," she said. Turning to Jeffries, Aguilar said the Democratic leader has "never turned his back on the will of the American people." He was the first candidate since McCarthy's ouster to face no opposition from his own party.
